The role

My Client is a leading provider of data centre solutions, serving businesses with state-of-the-art infrastructure to meet their evolving IT needs. We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Data Centre Chief Engineer to join our team in London.

Job Description:

As a Data Centre Chief Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our data centre facility. You will oversee routine and emergency services on various critical systems, including switchgear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building and power monitoring systems. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with IT managers and business leaders to coordinate projects, optimise plant safety, and enhance facility performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Delivering high-quality service and ensuring all customer demands are met promptly and effectively.
  • Acting as the second level escalation point for data centre facility-related issues or failures during out-of-hours emergencies.
  • Establishing performance benchmarks, conducting analysis, and preparing reports on all aspects of critical facility operations and maintenance.
  • Reviewing and updating maintenance plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and emergency operating procedures (EOPs) to support planned maintenance.
  • Working closely with Field Engineering to support and validate accurate power audits for future rack deployments.
  • Attending daily meetings with the data centre team to evaluate planned work and align it with business needs.

  • Influence various partner and external teams within a cluster and potentially a region.
  • Begin to influence senior leaders within the organisation.
  • Your work will impact work flow processes for a cluster and may extend to the entire region.
  • Provide training to other Chief Engineers and mentor and develop team members.

Execution:

  • Primarily tactical work, but you will have opportunities to contribute strategically.
  • Coordinate increasingly complex work activities within defined processes.
  • Assess and mitigate immediate risks, making decisions on escalation when necessary.
  • Define and implement best practices.
  • Optimise procedures, processes, and actively share best practices with the team.

Technical Complexity:

  • Handle highly complex technical troubleshooting and provide guidance on high-complexity technical issues.
  • Apply advanced technical expertise to support our business strategy.
  • Supervise and provide technical guidance on preventive/corrective maintenance tasks, meeting campus and cluster metrics.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for campus infrastructure.
  • Identify equipment deficiencies and implement solutions.
  • Develop work flows, emergency procedures, and processes to enhance operational efficiency.

Process Improvement:

  • Drive operational excellence through process optimisation.
  • Create and implement process improvement plans, providing valuable feedback to site leadership.

Suggested Experience:

  • 4+ years of experience in electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and fire systems within a critical infrastructure environment.
